Οι Κινέζοι "κατακτούν" και άλλη πρωτιά. Αυτή τη φορά με το νέο τους επανδρωμένο υποβρύχιο βαθυσκάφος το οποίο "έσπασε" τα ρεκόρ βάθους που κατείχε η Ιαπωνία με το αντίστοιχο όχημά της. Σε επιτυχημένη δοκιμαστική βύθιση, το σκάφος της Κίνας "έπιασε" τα 5056 μέτρα κατάδυσης ενω οι Κινέζοι αξιωματούχοι δήλωσαν πως είναι έτοιμο να σπάσει το κοντέρ ακόμα περισσότερο και να κατέβει πέραν των 7000 μέτρων(!) μέχρι το ...2012.
Το σκάφος ονομάζεται Jiaolong και φέρει το όνομα ενός φημισμένου θαλάσσιου Δράκου των Κινέζων. Με αυτές τις δυνατότητες, η Κίνα θα έχει τη δυνατότητα "εξερεύνησης" του 70% των θαλάσσιων βυθών!
Οι Κινέζοι έχουν προ πολλού ξεπεράσει το στάδιο της κακέκτυπης αντιγραφής εξοπλισμών των άλλων πάλαι ποτέ κραταιών δυνάμεων και τώρα είναι αυτοί που θέτουν τα τεχνολογικά όρια σε βυθό, επιφάνεια και διάστημα, αφήνοντας με το στόμα ανοιχτό τους επιστήμονες των ΗΠΑ οι οποίοι είχαν μείνει με την εντύπωση ότι οι Κινέζοι είναι πολύ πίσω στην εξερεύνηση του βυθού της θάλασσας.

China's manned deep-sea vessel, the Jiaolong, has successfully completed its third test run in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. The submersible reached a new record depth for China of 5,143 meters.
The State Oceanic Administration is holding a news conference, on the details of the latest dive. During Jiaolong's missions, the crew took photos and video, surveyed seabed, and took samples from the ocean floor. The purpose of the test dives was to conduct scientific research and test different functions of the craft. The deep sea poses a challenge to a vessel's capacity to withstand water pressure. The crew must work underwater for six to eight hours at a time.
By reaching depths of 5,000 meters, Jiaolong is now capable of exploring over 70 percent of the world's seabed. These test dives pave the way for a record-breaking 7,000-meter test dive attempt in 2012.
Japan is the current world record holder, with its Shinkai submersible reaching 6,527 meters in August, 1989.
China, initiated the Jiaolong project in 2002. China is the fifth country to send people more than 3,500 meters below sea level, following the United States, France, Russia and Japan.
The Jiaolong is named after a mythical sea dragon. It passed its first major benchmark between May and July last year, with 17 dives in the South China Sea, reaching depths of over 3,700 meters.
This is the third successful test dive for the Jiaolong.
